Dentures provide several benefits beyond restoring your smile when teeth are missing. Dentures also provide support for sagging facial denturesmuscles and correct speech affected by the gaps in your smile where teeth are missing. Several types of dentures are available to meet your needs. At Sood Family Dental in Shelby Township, our dentist, Dr. Sood, can recommend the best type of dentures for you.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used to replace missing teeth when some natural teeth still remain. Partial dentures help fill in the gaps where teeth are missing. There are two types of partial dentures, transitional and removable.

Transitional Partial Dentures: This type of denture is worn temporarily while a patient waits to be fitted with a removable partial denture. For example, transitional partial dentures are often worn following a tooth extraction. Once the gums have fully healed from the extraction, the transitional partial denture is replaced with a removable partial denture.

Removable Partial Dentures: This type of partial denture is meant to be worn long-term. Removable partial dentures are made from a light-weight material and are more comfortable for long-term use than transitional partial dentures.

Full Dentures

Full dentures, also called complete dentures, are worn when all of the natural teeth need to be replaced on the top or bottom arch, or both. Three types of full dentures are available. The dentist at our Shelby Township office could explain more about each type of full denture and recommend the right one for your needs. Types of full dentures include:

Immediate Full Dentures: Immediate full dentures serve a similar purpose as transitional partial dentures as they are meant to be worn temporarily. Following the extraction of any remaining natural teeth, a patient can be given an immediate full denture to wear while the gums heal from the extraction procedure. Once the gums have healed, the dentures can be replaced with conventional ones.

Conventional Full Dentures: This type of denture is worn long-term and is custom made for the best fit possible. Additionally, over time, conventional full dentures will also conform to a patient’s mouth for an even better fit. Custom making these dentures also makes it possible to craft dentures that look completely natural, like a patient’s own teeth.

Implant-Supported Overdentures: This type of full denture is also worn long-term like conventional dentures. A primary difference is that implant-supported overdentures are held in place with dental implants, which are placed in the jaw bone. An advantage of implant-supported overdentures is that the dental implants provide additional stability for the dentures.

Several types of partial or full dentures are available and our dentist can help identify the right type for you. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Sood, your dentist serving Shelby Township, MI, call Sood Family Dental at (586) 207-1471.
